Sage, I've noticed you manage to slip your name, a copyright symbol, and the year in practically every strip you make. I think you do this because you are afraid of copyright infringement or plagiarism (yes that applies to artistic work as well) but I have some news for you which you might find interesting:
- Once a work is in print or a fixed medium (such as the internet) it is covered by copyright.
- That means, you don't necessarily have to put "(c)Sage Leaves 2008" anywhere on the page--it is simply implied!
- To reproduce or in any way use the works of others without permission is illegal except when it meets the "fair-use" doctrine of the copyright law.
- This exception to ownership rights is critical in an educational environment where open exchange of information is vital.
But how can you prove that you are actually the original owner of this information?--of these comic strips? Well, luckily, if someone ever steals your comic and you want to sue them, bring in your hard drive. On your hard drive, as you know, are hard-wired dates and times proving that you are the original owner of the works.
The only reason I bring this up is because that sometimes your copyright can be distracting and draw away from the page. In the latest page you incorporated it into the strip, which was kinda funny, but very distracting. I read the copyright more than I read the punchline of the strip.
I put a "(c)2007-2008 Allan Wood" or whatever on my page just so that people would stop telling me to, but really it is unnecessary!
