We had a great show on Sunday, as Mark, Mike, DungeonWarden, and Fes discussed the Webcomic Bacon's characters.

We came up with 6 different characters (I can recall) such as:

A Talking Male Pig (being experimented on)
Crazy Lady Scientist
Male Emo Geek, Conspirator
Feminine Woman that play Extreme Sports (Opposite of a Tomboy)
Talking Pet (Ferret? Befriends pig?)
Bad French Chef that can only make German dishes, allergic to wine.

The "assignment" is that each person that came up with each character, initially, is to come back with some sketches and more of a description of this character.

The idea was that these people live in a town, and/or a state, or something, where bacon puns are aplenty. (potentially).

They all also live in an apartment building. Which helps keeps things flexible and adaptive for a variety of gags. Especially for a variety of new characters to come in as well.

The comic's rating would be about Web 14, with flexibility to a higher rating, but not to the extreme.

The webcomic itself, and it's main characters, will either be Open-sourced or Creative Commons BY-NC-SA, which will be discussed later.

The website will need to be constructed, we'll also look into that later.

Stay tuned for this show's MP3 release later this week.

Character discussion may occur in this thread. The character's initial creators get first dibs on finalization.

yes but have we any way of meeting or coming together to discuss the direction of the story and coordinating other things to that effect? Are we going to continue using this forum or do we need to start swaping IM names or what?

Story? It's gag-a-day and short, short story arcs.

as far as discussion, the forums will work for now.

I like how it's coming along so far. DungeonWarden's sketch from the other thread looks great. The scientist girl looks like a cross between Ardra and Daria.

I still think my idea of a Chairman Kaga-like school headmaster is a winner. Maybe not as a regular character, but as a recurring side character.

I'm not sold on the Culinary Arts School... not for the whole cast anyway, though some characters could be going there.

I've got some ideas for the Pig and the Scientist, as well as a Toaster character. I'll try to get some sketches up this weekend.

I also have some ideas for the talking pet too. Kinda a Jon and Garfield relationship with his owner... meaning the Pet is the real "master" of the household :P

I've thought about Becky, and I've been tussing about what her copyright is. I'm electing to go with a "Creative Commons BY-NC-SA" for her specifically. Especially since she was developed very much outside of this project.

Asside from that, I'm all for her having a place in the apartment, and I have some other developments for her:

Becky is an average sized girl, so a slight bit of a pudge. She's a tad short, but not that much. Long brown hair. She's usually chipper and lives in the hear and now. Dislikes discussing the past, but also does not think about the future that much either.

She is a mute (does not speak, but is not deaf). She communicates with sign language and can read lips, for the most part. She works at a radio station, and is a HAM radio enthusiast. Her favorite thing to do is to be alone in the nature listening to to the environment.

A mute huh? Won't that make it hard for everyone to understand in the comics. I mean what are the chances that every character in the comic will understand sign language? If see wants to have a meaningfull conversation with anyone that character will have to either know, learn, or have signlanguage translated through a middle man. All of these things of course would work perfectly with a great many jokes I think ^_^

So then for gag a day each person will be making random strips as they see fit then? should we work out some kind of schedule so that everyone can get a look at the current comic and then work with it in mind when creating the next strip? Just so someone doesnt horribly maim a character and then have that character not remember said maiming in the next strip, but then continue to live maimed in the third.

As for me I'm not sure what character I could add to this bunch but I'm forming some ideas (all of them of course involving mild to not so mild insanity)

An eccentric old asian man who speaks broken english maybe ^_^ Not sure but, I think I might go with that... I'll work on some sketches and see where it takes me, and I'll need to get around to listening to that podcast as well...

Yea, the idea is that people... ANYone really, can make their own comic gag, using most any of the characters (within their actual characters and descriptions), and submit it to the site, and get posted, without it disrupting any sort of story... because there won;t be one... though if someone was inclined to make a short story, they could. We/I would control the updates so noone would pertrude someone elses story update.

That's why this is a communal webcomic. Most anyone could submit something to the canon of the comic. I would actually like to make the comic and the main character the Creative Commons license so we can all main some level of control over it, but I'm not sure if it's necessary. That would be a group decision. If we go the CC route, the copyright would belong to "The Webcomic Bacon Group" which would be most everyone involved with the comic's development. Including creators that come later... if that makes sense. But again, that can be discussed more with the others.

As far as Becky, I guess I can;t picture her talking a whole lot. Since how I designed her... looking back... it seems to make sense. I forgot what comic I saw before, but I did see one with sign language translated via the "brackets" ("< >") in speech balloons.

EDIT: The more I think about the Toaster character, the more I Think it's stupid :P

Oh nonsense, we've already got a talking pig a ferret and all other kinds of crazy things, a living toaster would probably fit in. But if you don't like it you could always make it like a homicidal can opener or something with a tendency to fly off the handle without warning (maybe something less fatally dangerous, but more unpleasant to have angry at you, like a batter mixer or a waffle iron)

The possibilities for horrible living kitchen-ware are endless...

If inclined, we could have one apartment full of Anthro appliances.

But then again, that could be a whole comic by itself o_O :P

anthro apliances? like a nekko-blender? or a raccoon-coffeemaker?

I was thinking more like a little floating old style can opener, like with eyes or something. You could include it in the scientists failed projects

"Anthropomorphic" means to merely give human qualities to a non-human object/creature.

Toy Story characters are anthropomorphic. The Brave Little Toaster is anthropomorphic. "Anthro" doesn't always mean "humanoid animal" or "furry" :P

Now would an anthro-toaster have it's own apartment, or who they be living with someone else? I mean depending on the angle, the toaster could be getting a place to live for free simply by pretending to be a normal applicance. All we'd need is for one of the other characters to REALLY like toast.

Seeing as this would be a comic full of open source characters couldn't we suppose that jenny everywhere might also be involved to some degree? I hear she likes toast :D
